Columbia
River Sturgeon
Oregon fishermen are lucky to have the white sturgeon available in our waters. They are an
amazing and exciting fish to catch, but also wonderful to eat. Unlike
salmon, sturgeon are a white meat fish that can be prepared in many
different ways. Batter dipped and deep fried is a favorite and smoked
sturgeon is the best smoked fish you will ever eat. Smoked sturgeon sells
for $18.00 a pound and up.
It takes a bit of muscle to handle the large
oversize sturgeon that swim in the waters of Columbia River and Willamette River.
Sore arms can be
expected following a day of reeling in these prehistoric monster fish. Northwest white sturgeon can grow in excess of 14 feet
long and will sometimes weigh over 450 pounds. These trips are customized to the
size of fish you would prefer to catch, legal size (42-60 inches) or
oversized (60 inches plus). [

Sturgeon fishing the Columbia River. A significant economic and cultural resource throughout
the Northwest, white sturgeon recently became a popular target fishery
with major commercial landings in the Columbia River. In fact, Columbia
River sturgeon production, with its valuable roe for caviar, is second
only to the former Soviet Union's production. The Columbia River is also
the site of an intense sport fishery, as is the San Joaquin Delta in
California and the Willapa Bay in Washington where guided fishing trips
are popular. The white sturgeon is also an important fish for Native
American fishermen on the Columbia and Klamath rivers.
